Like most software engineers, I love to just mess around with stuff – you know – just for the fun of it. I always have something that I am working on as a learning project where I can try something new and different just for the sake of it. In looking at these new projects, cost is a serious concern. I need to be able to develop these applications with very low initial and annual maintenance costs. This needs to be balanced with the need to provide the enterprise with a stable, high-performance, enterprise-class solution. The cost of the software that I use to build the applications is thus a serious concern.

I recently decided to set up a web site for my family. We are distributed all around the world and while there are plenty of photo-sharing places out there, I wanted more than that.
